Happiness and Empathy

CHAPTER NINE

by David Nova

Why do I write about happiness at a time when the world seems to be falling apart? Because after some deep contemplation, the pursuit of happiness and our illusions about happiness seem to be at the root of the human condition. Our desire for happiness is universal. It connects us. Yet we don’t understand it. We are not masters of it, so it masters us.

Happiness and Our Illusions

CHAPTER EIGHT

by David Nova

We often tell our children to follow their dreams. We proclaim to ourselves and the world that we’re following our dreams. We like to dream. We like to imagine a better future for ourselves. We wrap ourselves up in our dreams. They become our expectations. We live in a world full of dreams, yet most of those dreams are simply illusions. We tend to get lost in our own illusions. CHAPTER THREE

by David Nova

One of the fundamental commonalities that all human beings seem to share is a desire for happiness. Nobody starts life wanting to be miserable and unhappy. As children we have an innate sense of joy, the gift of wonder, and boundless imagination. Heredity and environment can diminish that joy, past lives can color it, but arriving on planet Earth with a blank slate allows our innate spirit of joy to bloom. Ignorance is bliss, after all.

Happiness and the Universe

CHAPTER TWO

by David Nova

Believe it or not, the Universe wants us to be happy. The Universe wants us to have true happiness. And there’s the rub (to quote Hamlet). The Universe wants us to have true happiness, not false happiness, not illusory happiness. Yet the Universe is quite patient, allowing us to deceive ourselves as we take our time to rediscover what true happiness is.
